Dukhtar, a recipient of WorldView’s New Genre Fund, began its UK theatrical release with Mara Pictures on 3rd April 2015.

Dukhtar (Daughter) is a drama/ thriller set in the mountains of northern Pakistan about a young mother on the run with her ten year old daughter to save her from a child marriage. The film is inspired by true events and the first-time female filmmaker, Afia Nathaniel, from Pakistan, faced an uphill battle to make this film in below freezing conditions in the disputed territory between Pakistan and India with more than 200 extras, chase scenes on the world’s highest altitude roads and as the only female crew member in an all-male crew of 40 men.

Dukhtar has won critical acclaim since its World Premiere at Toronto in 2014 and became Pakistan’s official selection for the 87th Academy Awards “Best Foreign Language Film” category. After sold-out screenings at the BFI London and the London Asian Film Festival, the film is playing at theaters in London, Birmingham, Leicester, Oxford, Hereford, Penarth, Shropshire, and will be adding several more screens to its release. The film is also travelling as part of the Wales One World Film Festival and Borderlines Film Festival. More details on the release venues and dates can be found at the film’s website: www.dukhtarthefilm.com

The film has bagged several awards such as Best Film and Best Director at the South Asian International Film Fest, the Audience Award at Festival des Femmes in France, and Best Narrative Feature Film at the Sonoma International Film Festival.

Afia says, “We’re so thrilled to see the film gaining momentum in the UK and would like to thank Worldview for its support which came at such a crucial moment in the life of this film. There’s a brand new way to demand films in UK (through www.ourscreen.com) to come to your towns and cities. So if enough people demand the film to be watched in those towns and cities, Dukhtar will come to you.”
